STATUS REPORT - DOE REMEDIAL ACTION PROGRAM (331161)

During the subject quarter, the following significant actions were taken by the WMUR staff to execute our responsibility to participate, review, ana concur in DOE's conduct of the UMTRAP:

1.

Establishment of more effective staff level daily working relationships with the Remedial Actions Program Office, DOE-HQ and the UMTRAP Project Office, DOE - Albuquerque.

2.

Establishment of. permanent NRC representation on the 'JMTRAP Technology Working Group, the steering group for coordination /

evaluation of tailings disposal R&D for the UMTRAP.

3.

Provided comments to DOE on the outline " Source Terms and Transport Modeling" prepared by Ford, Bacon, and Davis Utah, Inc.

(November 19, 1980 letter to D. Groelsema, DOE-HQ attached.

4.

Participated in development of the DOE guide for " Contents of UMTRAP Environmental Impact Statements", subsequently released by DOE in November,1980.

5.

Reviewed the final draft of 1980 DOE UMTRAP Annual Status Report to Congress (December 4,1980 letter to Sheldon Meyers, DOE-HQ attached).

6.

Provided NRC staff position to DOE regarding fencing of eight UMTRAP inactive mill tailings processing sites (December 18, 1980 letter to R. C. Clusen, DOE-HQ attached.
