Route 3 Box 137G Russellville, Arkansas 72801

Dear Mr. Yelverton:

1

SUBJECT:

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN FOR STATION BLACK 0UT (580) MODiflCATION - ARKANSAS NUCLEAR ONE, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. M84338 AND 84339)

The NRC staff has completed its review of your conceptual design for the proposed alternate AC (AAC) power source, as discussed in the enclosed safety evaluation (SE). The conceptual design was submitted by your letter dated August 14, 1992.

The staff finds that the conceptual design meets the guidelines of Regulatory [

Guide (RG) 1.155 and NUMARC 87-00, and is therefore acceptable. However, you should provide a written commitment to an initial test of the AAC power source as indicated in Section 3.4 of the SE. In view of the complexity of the proposed additions and modifications, the staff has accepted your proposed date of December 31, 1994, as a reasonable schedule for implementing the SB0 Rule.

This completes our review under TAC Nos. M84338 and M84339.
