NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 10 CFR Parts 50, 52 and 100 RIN 3150-AD93 Reactor Site Criteria Including Seismic and Earthquake Engineering Criteria for Nuclear Power Plants and Proposed Denial of Petition from Free Environment, Inc, et al.

AGENCY:

Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

ACTION:

Proposed rule: Extension of comment period.

SUMMARY

On October 20, 1992.(57 FR 47802), the NRC published for public comment a proposed rule to update the criteria used in decisions regarding power reactor siting, inclu, ding geologic, seismic, and earthquake engineering considerations for future nuclear power plants.

The comment period for this proposed rule was to have expired on February 17, 1993.

The availability of the five draft regulatory guides and the standard review plan section that were developed to provide guidance on meeting the proposed regulations was published on November 25, 1992 (57 FR 55601).

Because the proposed rule would move the detailed guidance from the regulation and place it into a regulatory guide, a critical evaluation of the proposed rule-could not be performed until the draft regulatory guides and standard review plan section were available. The NRC has stated that comments on the draft regulatory guides and standard review plan section would be most helpful if received by March 24, 1993.

In view of the importance of the proposed rule and the differences in the comment period, the NRC has decided to extend the comment period on the proposed rule for an additional thirty six days. The extended comment period now expires March 24, 1993.
