This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verifi-J cation or evaluation and is basically all that is known by NRC staff on this date.

Subject:
SMALL FIRE IN TMI-2 FUEL HANDLING BUILDING At 9:07 PM, June 11, 1985, the licensee experienced a small electrical fire on the upper level of the Fuel Handling Building. Welding cables used for modifications to the Submerged Demineralizer System (SDS), shorted against an aluminum portable platform and melted a hole in the platform. The fire brigade responded and de-energized the cables. The event was terminated at 9:10 PM.
No offsite fire fighting units were contacted. The NRC TMI Program Office was notified shortly after the event.
No personnel injury, equipment damage, or radiological release occurred.
Media interest may occur because of public sensitivity to TMI related events. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was informed.
