International Conference on Nuclear Systems Thermalhydraulics - Pisa (I),
May 1994.
Dear Dr.1. Selin in the frame of -the celebrations of the 650th anniversary since its-foundadon (Academic Year 1993/1994), the University of Pisa is organizing several Internadonal Conferences mainly related to the scientific history (e.g. from G. Galilei to E. Fermi) and to the present research/ cultural acdvides ongoing in the town. Funds will be made available by the Italian Government to contribute to the success of the foreseen activities.
In particular, this Department is organizing an International Confr:rence on Nuclear System Thermalhydraulics.
This Conference will be held at Pisa University on-May 1994, with the -
attendance of numerous Sciendsts, Researchers and Engineers.
Due to the importance of the e,ent, the Organizers have the pleasure to invite j you to be Member of the Conference Honour Committee and would like to obtain the i
scientific sponsorship of the NRC.
Awaiting for a kind reply from you, we enclose the preliminary proposal of the Conference, which explains aims, main areas and time schedule.
Ilest regards.

4 Pronosal INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUCLEAR SYSTEMS THERMALHYDRAULICS Piss (I), May 1994
- 1. Foreword and reasons fc,r the Conference In order to celebrate the 650th anniversary since its foundation (Accademic Year 1993/94), the University of Pisa is organizing several International Conferences mamly related to the scientific history (e.g. from G. Galilei to E. Fermi) and to the present research/ cultural activities ongoing in the town. Funds will be made available by the Italian Government to contribute to the success of the foreseen activities.
The Dipartimento di Costruzioni Meccaniche e Nucleari (DCMN) of the University of Pisa has already organized International Conferences among which the " Specialists Meeting on Small Break LOCA Analyses in LWRs" held in 1985 with the sponsorship of OECD-CSNI, ANS,IAEA, NRC.
An OECD-CSNI Specialist Meeting on Transient 2-Phase Flow was held in Aix-En-Provenc: on April 1992. Less than 30 invited papers, covering a very broad range of subjects were presented in this Meeting and should constitute important reference points for the proposed Conference.
Among the various initiatives undertaken in this area, considering the previously remarked conditio'is, it seemed reasonable to propose an International Conference covering topics essentially similar to those discussed in the OECD-CSNI 1992 meeting, with the addition of containment thermalhydraulics. The Conference will be open also to non-OECD countries and could be attended by 400-600 participants.
- 2. Conference goals The proposed main goals of the Conference are:
a) Evaluation of the State-of the-Art in Nuclear System 'Ihermalhydraulics at a time when most of the researches in this area have been completed;
5 4 b) Definition of research requirements for die future with main reference to the design of new generation reactors and the Accident Management.
- 3. Main Areas to be covered Three main areas will be covered in the Conference:
- Primary uid Secondary System Thermalhydraulics;
- Containment Therma 1 hydraulics including the coupling with Primary System;
- Thermaihydraulics in the Severe Accident field.
The detailed topics in each area, will be fixed at a later date.
- 4. Requests of sponership OECD :SNI already approved the objectivt.s and the themes of the Conference giving the required support.o the organization.
A similar request is made to other Nadonal and Intemational Institutions.
- 5. Time Schedule Protv sal of the Conference at the CSN1 Meeting Nov. 91
- Request for cooperation / sponsorship to other national &
Sept.92 intemational organizations (e.g. IAEA, CEC, ENEA, ENEL, ANS, ENS, etc.)
Meeting in Pisa of the Technical Committee to fix the Nov. 92 Conference Topics, to define the organization and to prepare a list ofinvited speakers
