Dear Mr. Hanauer:

This is in response to your letter dated December 28, 1984, concerning our December 11, 1984, re:ponse to your request for information pertaining to the results of initial written operator examinations taken by candidates of 15 listed plants. Records which reflect the information you seek are being placed in the NRC Public Document Room. You may obtain access to these records, which are identified on the enclosed appendix, by presenting a copy of this letter or by requesting folder F0!A-84-846 in your name. Portions of the records have been deleted in order to withhold the names of individuals who took the exams because disclosure of this information would constitute a clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy. This information is not within the scope of your request. We were informed by the staff that examination results for LaSalle Units 1 and 2 and San Onofre Unit 3 were previously provided in response to your November 1, 1984 letter. McGuire operators and senior operators licensed prior to fuel loading of Unit 2 were previously licensed on McGuire Unit 1. In accordance with the provisions of 10 CFR 55.24, the NRC waived most of the examination requirements and required a representative sample (50 percent of the licensed staff) to take oral examinations on Unit 1/ Unit 2 differences and interactions. On the basis of the 100 percent success rate on these oral examinations, the NRC amended the existing Unit I licenses of all candidates for dual unit operation.
