Docket Nos. 50-498 and 50-499 Mr. Donald P. Hall Group Vice-President, Nuclear Houston Lighting & Power Company P. O. Box 1700 Houston, Texas 77251

Dear Mr. Hall:

SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN 92-01, SUPPLEMENT 1, " FAILURE OF THERMO-LAG 330 FIRE BARRIER SYSTEM" SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. MS3933 AND M83934)

By letter dated September 25, 1992 (ST-HL-AE-4216), Houston Lighting and Power Company (HL&P) provided a response to NRC Bulletin 92-01, Supplement I for the South Texas Project, Units 1 and 2 (STP).

The response stated that compensatory measures have been implemented consistent with the STP fire protection program as described in the STP Updated Final Safety Analysis Report (UFSAR).

The response also provided information regarding the long term corrective action to ensure or restore operability, it stated that HL&P supports the industry program being coordinated by NUMARC and that HL&P will apply the results of the efforts, when completed, to the affected S1P Thermo-Lag installations.

We have reviewed the response and find it acceptable.

Please inform us when all corrective actions have been completed.

Further NRC review, if any, will be performed by inspection or audit.

Sincerely, Original Signed By George F. Dick, Jr., Senior Project Manager Project Directorate IV-2 Division of Reactor Projects III/IV/V Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation cc:
