As stated in fiUREG 0578, all licenceen must submit a proposed nethod of innlementation for the item in the above cub, iect to the NRC for review and annrovn) nrior to innlementation.
Precented herein is the nrononed desien for the high rance containment radiation monitoring nynten at Calvert Cliffn Muclear Power Plant.
The exinting containnent aren radiation nonitoring systen concints of four GM tube detectors located in separate quadranta of the containment on the 69' elevation. Their range is from 10-1 to 10h nR/hr with an energy response of 1 20% from.08 to 3.0 tieV.
Indication and alarna are provided in the main control room.
Baltinore Gas and Electric plans to install a high range containment radiation nonitoring system to sunnlement the existing monitors bytheJaguary1,1931, deadline. Thene new monitors vill have a range of 1 00 to 10 R/hr which vill nrovide a one decade overlan with the range of the existing monitors.
In addition, they can respond to enercy leveln as lov an 60 kev vith an accuracy of i 20% for energy levels between 0.1 and 3.0 MeV. The two detectora per unit vill be located on the 60' level in the containment 1800 apart.
All the instrunentation/ equipment vill be f
environmentally and coismically cualified per IEEE 323-197h and IEEE 3hh-l 1975 for their resnective noctulated incident narameters. The system, l

Mr. R. W. Reid " arch 17, 1980 which vill be povered from vital bunen, vill have a continuoun dicolay and alarms in the-main control room.
The failure, radiation alert, and high radiation alarms vill he connected to both the r.ain annunciator system and the computer. A continuous detector nicnal corresponding to 1 R/hr from a check source in the detector nrovides verification of the system'n operability. The Vendor vill nunnly a calibration program for the enlibration of the monitoring system during refueling outares.
It is requested that a reply be returned within two months after receint of thic Jetter so that any viable conments could be incor-porated.into the decirn before inctallation begins.
The monitoring system in presently on order.
Very truly yours, [
