TIFBINE FAILUXE (SUPPLDtFNIAL INFOP.MATION) frJring a plant stari.up on February 14, 1980 at approximately 1160 AM with the turbine at 1800 RfM but not tied to the grid. a loud noise was heard in the Lp turbine scencpanied by excessive vibrcLion greater than 10 mils (full scale de f"lection). Tne turbine tripped and enasted to a stop in 25-30 minutes (norinal coast dcwn is about I hour).
Prelirninary examination through an extraction stcata line flange indicate darage to the fourth and fifth stages of the eight stage LP turbine. No indication of penetration througn the turbine casings have been fourd and a chloride analysis of condericate was performed with negative res ults.
Yestinghovsc representatives are en site performing an investigation and NRC personnel arc in route to the site.

&dia interest is possible bec.ause of sensitivity to nuclear power issues. The comenwealth of Passachusetts has been infomed.
A press release is planned by the licensec but not the hRC at this tirte.
