Trio Report for Site Visit to the Maybell. Colorado Site DaLg: October 5, 1992 P_lan: Maybell UMTRA Project Site, Maybell, Colorado Purnose: Meeting with DOE Project Manager and 00E _ Technical Assi.tance Contractor (TAC) and general site familiarization.

Attendees: NRC: M. Layton DOE. P. Mann COH: L. Bruskin TAC: D. Heidenburg E. Storm UMETCO: E. Ley R. Evans Discussion:

The NRC staff departed Craig, Colorado at 7:30 am and arrived at the Maybell site ,

at approximately 8:00 am. The NRC, DOE, TAC and COH representatives were greeted at the site by Mr. Ed Ley and Mr. Ron Evans of UMETC0. Mr. Ley provided a safety briefing to all attendees and gave a brief description of the tailings pile '

layout, location of mining pits, and location of the former mill. Mr. Ley and Mr. Evans then provided a guided vehicle tour around the tailings embankment and the head of Johnson Wash, near the southern end of the tailings. The tailings pile was surrounded with a chain-link fence and accompanying placards indicating radioactive materials beyond the fenced boundary. Several passive air monitoring stations were noticed at various locations along the fence line of the pile. The pile sported a cover of sparse vegetation, and there were no significant signs of erosion along the sloped edges of the pile.

The guided tour then proceeded to the top of the overburden pile of the adjacent Rob Pit ta gain a panoramic view of the tailings and surrounding mine pits. The group was then led to the Rob Pit where exposures of-the Browns Park Formation could be observed. _ The bottom of the Rob Pit contained standing water that likely represents the water-table elevation in that area. Exposures of the Browns Park Formation consisted of a loose and unconsolidated silty, very-fine sand with high-angle cross-bedding with some lenses and layers of slightly cemented silt and sand. The Rob' Pit exhibited approximately 100 to 150 feet of.

vertical exposure.

The NRC, DOE, TAC and CDH representatives continued the tour of the surrounding mine pits without the UMETCO guides. The group traveled to Johnson Pit, south

, of the tailings pile, and several mine pits, north of the pile. .along a presumed ore-body trend. Exposures of the Browns Park Formation were viewed -for any variations of character from those observed in the Rob Pit. All observed ,

exposures were identical to the Rob Pit exposure, witF the exception of varying amounts of cementation, and organic / mineral staining. Several monitoring wells were observed in the down-gradient and up-gradient areas of the tailings pile.

All observed wells were fitted with a steel protective casing and pad lock. The NRC staff left the Maybell site at about 12:30 pm and proceeded to Grand Junction, Colorado, for the Rifle site tour scheduled for October 6,1992.
