Certificate of Compliance No. 9176

]

Revision No. 7 i

j By application dated October 23, 1992, Pacific Nuclear requested an amendment to Certificate of Compliance No. 9176, to authorize use of a removable shield j

insert.

1 The shield insert is a two-inch thick steel cylinder sized to accept 142 cubic i

foot containers.

The estimated weight of the proposed shield insert is i

approximately 10,600 pounds.

The casks are licensed for a maximum payload j

weight of 20,000 pounds. The maximum weight of payload, excluding the proposed shield insert, would then be approximately 9,400 pounds.

The weight of the payload includes weight of the contents, secondary containers, and shoring, as well as the shield insert.

1 l

The insert will be used for shielding as required to meet the external i

radiation standards for packages transported as exclusive use.

Radiation j

measurements will be performed prior to each shipment, as specified in the j

supplement and in the operating procedures for the packages.

l The Certificate of Compliance has been conditioned to authorize the optional i

use of the shield insert in these packages.

Condition No. 7 of the j

Certificate has been revised to clarify that the maximum gross weight of the l

contents, secondary containers and shoring (20,000 pounds) also includes the weight of the removable shield insert.

l As requested by letter dated December 2,1992, the Certificate holder has been l

changed from Nuclear Packaging, Inc to Pacific Nuclear Systems, Inc.

Nuclear Packaging is a subsidiary of Pacific Nuclear.

These changes do not affect the ability of the package to meet the

[

requirements of 10 CFR Part 71.
