Dear Mr. Santa n:

Tne Nuclear Regulatory Coccission's (NRC's) Advisory Coccittee on Reactor Safety (ACRS) recently met with NRC staff to discuss the radiological a.spects of our transportation regulations. A report of that meeting and five ACRS recoscendations were forwarded to us by memorandum dated August 11, 1983 a copy of which is enclosed for your information.

Please note that recoscendations 2, 3, and 5 deal with radiation exposures of transport workers and the general public, infonnation useful in determining the causes and extent of radiation exposures in transportation, and the anticipated schedule for implementing the new International Atomic Energy Agency transport worker radiation exposure control scheme in domestic regulations. Since the Department of Transportation and Nuclear Regulatory Comission share reponsibility for this aspect of transportation regulations under our respective legislative authorities, we wanted to share these recomendations with you.

I will contact you shortly regarding a meeting to discuss some of these issues.

Sincerely, Richard E. Cunningham, Director Division of Fuel Cycle and Material Safety Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards
