Dear Mr. Black:

The Mississippi Power & Light Company has applied for operating licenses.for. Grand Gulf Huclear Station, Units 1 and 2, which are under construction in Claiborne County, Mississippi, on the east bank of the Mississippi River 4 approximately 25 miles south of Vicksburg and 37 miles north of Natchez. Construction of these facilities was authorized on May 3,1974. The location of the site and the associated transmission lines are shown in the enclosed 1 maps. I We are preparing an Environmental Impact Statement as part of our operating license review. Based on our interpretation of Section 7(c) of the l Endangered Species Act Amendments of 1978 (PL 95-632) and the fact that-construction of the Grand Gulf Station began prior to November 10,1978, i initiation of consultation is not required. However, to assure a thorough review, we request that your office provide any information you may have as to whether plants or animals listed or proposed to be listed as endangered i or threatened species may be present in the vicinity of the site or transmission corridors. j Sincerely, l -Ronald L.
