This is in reply to your letter of November 2,1979, requesting information concerning the need for nuclear power in our society.
You may be interested in the enclosed excerpts from the "Second National Energy Plan" transmitted on May 7,1979, by a nessage from President Carter to the Congress.
Included are the Overview of the plan and Chapter V of l
" Coal and Nuclear:
The Transitional Energy Sources."
The policy for coal and nuclear power given on the last page of the enclosure includes the following statement:
"The Nation's mid-term energy situation depend' on successfully maintaining and expanding the use of coal and s
nuclear power. These two sources are commercially available today and can be enlarged if the markets grow and. heir critical environmental and social problems are overcome."
