Dear Ms. Van lenten:

This is in response to your request of November 25, 1992 for information on the storage of mixed waste.

Currently, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are developing a guidance document to assist mixed waste managers store their mixed waste in compliance with both agencies' requirements. A public meeting was held on November 12, 1992, in Washington DC, to solicit early input from interested individuals on the issues to be addressed in this guidance document. When this guidance is finalized, a notice will be placed in the Federal Reaister announcing the availability of the guidance.

For your information, I have enclosed the following:

Guidance on the Definition and Identification of Commercial Mixed Low-level Radioactive and Hazardous Waste and Answers to Anticipated Questions.

2.

Clarification by EPA of Requirements foi Facilities that Treat, Store or Dispose of Radioactive Mixed Waste to Obtain Interim Status Pursbant to Subtitle C of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

3.

Guidance on the Land Disposal Restrictions' Effects on Storage and Disposal of Commercial Mixed Waste.

4.

A RCRA Perspective for NRC Licensees.

5.

Information Notice 90-09: Extended Interim Storage of Low-level Radioactive Waste by Fuel Cycle and Mcterials Licensees.

6.

Information Notice 89-13: Alternative Waste Management Procedures in Case of Denial of Access to Low-Level Waste Disposal Sites.

7.

Generic letter 89-14: Commercial Storage at Power Reactor Sites of Low-Level Radioactive Waste Not Generated _/ the Utility.

8.

Generic letter 81-38: Storage of Low-Level Radioactive Waste at Power Reactor Sites.

I also suggest that you obtain a copy of " RCRA Orientation Manual - 1990 Edition" (EPA 530-SW-90-036) for more information on RCRA.
