Nuclear Regulatory Commission 7920 Norfolk Avenue Bethesda, MD 20814 Attention:

Mr. Walter Butler, Chief Licensing Branch 2 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

CODE CASE N-413 HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-354 Public Service Electric and Gas Company requests approval to apply Code Case N-413 to the Hope Creek piping as-built reconciliation.

The use of Code Case N-413, a copy of which is attached, will allow the use of fillet weld sizes based upon calculated forces and moments rather than establishing a minimum weld size based upon member thicknesses.

As Public Service Electric and Gas is presently in the process of reconciling the Hope Creek as-built piping, an expedited reply would be appreciated.

Should you have any questions in this regard, do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, r

Annex 84-61D q

i MC 54-480 N84-043 Case N-413 Minimum Size of Fillet Welds for Linear Type supports section III, Division 1, subsection NF Inquiry May the fillet or partial penetration weld sizes specified in design documents be less than those specified in Subsection NF, Table NF-3324.5(d), and Appendix XVIII, Table XVII-2452.1-1 provided the stress limits are not exceeded?

Reply It is the opinion of the Conunittee that, until the referenced tables are removed from the code, fillet and partial penetra-tion weld sizes smaller than the sites listed in Subsection NF, Table NT-3324.5 (d)-1, and Appendix XVIII, Table xvii-2452.1-1 are permitted, provided that, when considering the limiting design or service loadings of the Design Specification, the allowable limits of Table NF-33I4.5(a) (1) are met, and the m

weld size is specified on the design drawings.

This Code Case number shall be listed on the documentation for the support.
