I am a nearly life-long resident who has watched the expansion of the salt-dome storage and viewed its accidents and see that there will only be more to come.
People often forget that nuclear waste is different from other types of toxic waste. Once it is released into the environment, there is simply no way to remediate or remove it. It stays there for hundreds of thousands of years.
I am not sure that anything I write here will change the minds of those intent on dumping nuclear waste in NM. WE are a poor and poorly educated state and there will be very many people who will see only the prospect of employment and wish to ignore the longterm toxic effects of this development. I can only hope that the state government of New Mexico will weigh in and deny this permit. I trust NM state government a LOT more than the NRC. Please, preserve our state from centuries of slow invisible poisoning--give ti to Texas or Oklahoma, where I suspect they care a lot less about the environment.
