Subject:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Units Nos.1 & 2; Dockets Nos. 50-317 and 50-318 NUREG-0737 Item II.F.I.1, Noble Gas Steam Effluent Monitor Gentlemen:

Baltimore Gus and Electric Company hereby withdraws its November 1,1984 request for modification of NRC Order dated March 2,1984, pertaining to the schedule for installation of the noble gas steam effluent monitor. As discussed with your staff on December 21,1984, installation of the subject instrumentation has been determined to be outage-related in that certain supporting work activities inside the main steam penetration room are required. Consequently, installation will be completed during the next scheduled outage of sufficient duration following December 31,1984, in accordance with the subject NRC order.

The work activities to be accomplished inside the main steam penetration room include:

(1) removal of the detector from the existing shield assembly and placement in a calibration test stand (to be set up in the room), (2) calibration and testing, and (3) replacement of the detector in the shield assembly. Also, the detector will be modified slightly by the addition of a low-power radiation source which will serve to provide a minimum continuous control room indication to facilitate periodic verification of system operability.

If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, b
