U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT Docket Nos. 50-282 License Nos. DPR-42 50-306 DPR-60 Steam Generator Insoection Follow-uo i

During the inspections of Unit 1 steam generator tube sleeves during the Winter 1996 refueling outage, indications were observed which prompted removal of sleeved tubes

)

in order to perform metallurgical examinations to determine the implications of these l

indications. We submitted a letter dated February 28,1996 outlining our understanding of those indications as known at that time. In the letter we committed to providing the results of the metallurgical analysis and our conclusions for NRC review and concurrence within 90 days of startup. We have submitted the vendor's metallurgical i

analysis (by letter dated May 3,1996) and made an oral presentation of our conclusions at the White Flint NRC offices on May 9,1996.

As a result of information learned during the metailurgical examinations, the ultrasonic examination data was reanalyzed for some sleeved tubes. This resulted in different conclusions for three in-service tubes than originally reached. Since reporting these results via the 1-hour reporting requirements of 10 CFR 50.72 on May 28,1996 we have been discussing these revised conclusions with NRC staff.

This new data needs to be considered before we reach our final conclusions and make the submittal committed to by the February 28,1996 letter (this submittal would be due June 3). In discussion with NRC staff on May 30,1996 we determined that it is appropriate to delay this submittal. We have decided that we should be able to make the submittal by the date that the Licensee Event Report per the reporting requirements of 10 CFR 50.73 is due (June 27,1996).
