, ATTACIIMENT (1) l SPECIAL REPORT CONCERNING AN INOPERABLE FIRE PUMP l

l CAUSE OF INOPERABILITY On August 7,1996 the Diesel Fire Pump was disabled to perform routine maintenance on the pump.

This maintenance included replacement of pump bearings, sleeves, shaft, and balancing. The Diesel Fire Pump is one of two high pressure pumps in the fire suppression water system. l As specified by Technical Specification 3.7.11.1, Action Statement a, if one pump is inoperable and cannot be restored within 7 days, a Special Report must be submitted within 30 days outlining the plans j and procedures to be used to provide for the loss of redundancy in this system.

l ACTION TAKEN As specified by Technical Specification 3.7.11.1, Action Statement a, with only one pump inoperable, l restore it to operable status within 7 days. The Electric Driven Fire Pump remained in service and the I

applicable sections of Operating Instruction 01-20, " Fire Protection System," which requires assigning an operator to open the fire main cross connect valve to the outside building complex fire pump house if neither fire pump failed to start. These actions remained in place until the fire pump was returned to operable status on August 14,1996.

PLANS AND PROCEDURES Work on the Diesel Fire Pump was completed, the pump tested, and was restored to an operable status on August 14,1996.
