Subject:

Exceedence Notification for NPDES Permit No. 21B000ll*DD; Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station

Dear Mr. Dunlavy:

In accordance with the requirements of Part A.2 of NPDES Permit No.

21B000ll*DD for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, we wish to notify you of a recent exceedence condition.

The Total Suspended Solids (TSS) thirty-day average limit (30 mg/1) was exceeded at outf all 002 (Area Runof f) for the month of April 1985. The Total Suspended Solids Concentration averaged 48 mg/l for the month, which is above the thirty-day average 30 mg/l limit.

Date Outfall Parameter Analysis April 1985 002 Total Suspended 48 mg/l Solids (30 day avg.)

The existence of an average TSS concentration in excess of 30 mg/l for April at this sampling location was attributed to the strong westerly winds and heavy rains which occurred at the beginning of the month.

Wind speeds in excess of 25 mph were recorded on April 1 and 3, with nearly 2 inches of rain falling on March 31. These meteorological conditions in association with increased area runoff, agitated bottom sediments causing a resuspension of solids in the pond waters prior to sampling.

l As you are aware, Toledo Edison has contracted with an independent consulting l firm to assess the collection efficiency of Outfall 002 and to supply alter-natives to reduce total suspended solids concentrations at the discharge of the Davis-Besse Training Center Pond. A viable, workable solution is antic-l ipated upon completion of the project with implementation to directly follow.

If you have any questions regarding this notice, please contact Patrick j McCloskey, Environmental Monitoring at (419) 249-5000, ext. 711.

I Sincerely, M= -
