We have reviewed your letter dated May 2,1996, in which you provided the Staffs opinion 1 about our proposal to modify our commitment regarding the date for the initiation of a mid-cycle Braidwood Unit I steam generator tube inspection. Our original commitment, as subsequently clarified in our letter to you dated April 29, 1996, specified that Braidwood would initiate an inspection prior to July 13,19%, if our proposed revision was found unacceptable.

Your letter states that in light of the recent Byron Unit I cream generator eddy current inspection data obtained during the present refueling outage, the Staff finds our proposed modification to our original commitment unacceptable. Commonwealth Edison Company (Comed) understands the Staffs position and therefore, intends to conduct a midcycle J inspection at Braidwood Unit I no later than July 13, 1996. Comed continues to believe a technical basis exists which supports deferring the mid-cycle inspection until the fall. This information will be presented to you at a meeting during the week of May 13th. If after your review of this information you fmd it resolves your concerns, then Comed requests that the 4 Staff reconsider our request for a fall outage. I We look forward to meeting with you to further discuss this important topic.

Sincerely, Karl L. ' up y
