Subject:
Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. I and No. 2 BV-1 Docket No. 50-334, License No. DPR-66 BV-2 Docket No. 50-412, License No. NPF-73 Response to NRC Bulletin No. 96-02 As requested in NRC Bulletin 96-02: " Movement of Heavy Loads Over Spent Fuel, Over Fuel in the Reactor Core or Over Safety-Related Equipment," a review of the Beaver Valley Power Station (BVPS) plans and capabilities for handling heavy loads while the reactor is at power (i.e., in all modes other than cold shutdown, refueling and defueled) was performed. The results of the review are listed below.
Within the next two years from the date of the Bulletin, we do not plan to implement activities involving the handling of heavy loads (as defined by BVPS administrative procedures addressing NUREG-0612, Phase I guidelines) over spent fuel or fuel in the reactor core while the reactor is at power. The use of dry storage casks is not currently planned at BVPS.
However, activities involving the handling of heavy loads over safety-related equipment while the reactor is at power may be performed in the next two years. These activities, if implemented, will be conducted within the constraints of our existing administrative procedures established to address NUREG-0612, Phase I guidelines and would be within the licensing basis for BVPS. Therefore, no changes to BVPS license documents are anticipated based on our review of this Bulletin.
If you have any questions concerning this response, please contact Mr. Roy K. Brosi at (412) 393-5210.
