e g i Federal Emergency Management Agency 1 Washington, D.C. 20472 MAY 71985 g MEMORANDUM FOR: Edward L. Jordan Division of Emergency Preparedness and Engineering Response Of fice of Inspection and Enforcement 11 . uc1 r atory Commission FROM: 1 r . r m Assistant Associate Director Of fice of Natural and Technological Hazards Programs

SUBJECT:

Shoreham Nuclear Power Station Alert and Notification System Review This is in response to your memorandum of March 29, 1985, in which you requested that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) review the Shoreham Nuclear Power Station alert and notification systen (ANS) design submitted by the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO). The Shoreham ANS will be reviewed in conjunction with the ongoing program for the evaluation for alert and notification systems at nuclear power plants as outlined in FEMA-43.

Tentatively, the Shoreham ANS technical review is scheduled for completion by Fall 1985, with a demonstration of the system and public telephone survey to follow shortly thereafter. However, the conduct of the survey is subject to Office of Management and Budget (OMB) reapproval of the next series of telephone surveys.

All current OMB-approved surveys were scheduled at other nuclear power sites prior to receipt of the Shoreham ANS report. Therefore, based on chronological receipt of this report, an OMB approval for FEMA to conduct the next series of telephone surveys is required before conducting one at Shoreham.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Robert S. Wilkerson, Chief Technological Hazards Division at 646-2861.
