Dear Dr. Murley:

'IE BULLETIN 83-03 CHECK VALVE FAILURES IN RAW WATER COOLING SYSTEMS OF DIESEL GENERATORS SALEM GENERATING STATION

-UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 As committed in our response dated June 7, 1983, the applicable Unit 1 Check valves were radiographed during the fifth refueling outage.

It was determined that two of the valves did not fully close when flow was cut off.

Work orders were initiated and repairs were made to the affected valves.

This information was reviewed by the NRC Resident Inspector during the course of Combined Inspection 50-272/84-19 and 50-311/84-19 and found to be acceptable.

The above information completes the PSE&G response to IE Bulletin 83-03.
