Subject:
Docket No. 50-482: Additional Information Regarding Chemical Consistency of Thermo-Lag Lire Barriers Gentlemen:
1 Reference 1 requested additional information regarding the Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barriers installed at Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCGS).
Specifically, Question 1.d requested a written report providing the results of tests and analyses performed to verify the material properties of Ther;ao-Lag i
330-1 Fire Barriers installed at WCGS.
References 2,
3 and 4 provided information in response to Reference 1.
However, Reference 5 indicated that the information provided was incomplete with regard to the chemical consistency of Thermo-Lag materials.
Provided below is additional information to complete Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating i
Corporation's (WCNOC's) response to Question 1.d of Reference 1.

As part of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI, formerly NUMARC) Thermo-Lag fire barrier material chemical testing
- program, WCNOC provided to NUCON International, Inc.,
5 WCGS Thermo-Lag fire barrier samples.
These samples were selected in accordance with the sample selection criteria provided by NEI in their February 3, 1995 letter to affected Licensees, and are representative l
of the types and kinds of Thermo-Lag material installed at WCGS.
NUCON documented the results of their tests on the 5 WCGS Thermo-Lag fire barrier samples in a report to WCNOC dated April 17, 1995.
The NUCON report indicates that the chemical composition of the 5 WCGS Thermo-Lag fire barrier samples are similar to each other and with the rest of the industry samples tested.
The report further indicates that the test results from all tested samples are l
consistent with results that NUCON expected to see, based on their knowledge of the original composition of the Thermo-Lag material.
NUCON indicated, in a report to NEI dated August 29, 1995, that they tested l
169 Thermo-Lag samples received from 25 plants (including samples from the Thermo-Lag material provided to NEI by these plants for the NEI fire testing program).
NUCON indicated that the results of their test program show that all of the samples are consis'ent with one another in terms of organic and inorganic chemical compositicc l
Based on the test results from the NEI chemical testing program, the degree of l
chemical consistency of the WCGS samples with other industry samples l
adequately demonstrates that WCNOC's installed Thermo-Lag 330-1 fire barrier materials are equivalent to t.he materials tested in the industry fire l
endurance tests, and that the '1hermo-Lag materials installed at WCGS continue to meet NRC requirements and licensing commitments.
The test results discussed above and WCGS-specific Thermo-Lag evaluationa are available onsite for future NRC audits and inspections.
