SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE The Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station, Unit No. 1, was operating at 100% power at the beginning of February 1985.

On February 16,1985 at 0900 hours0.0104 days
0.25 hours
0.00149 weeks
3.4245e-4 months
, an urgent f ailure alarm was received on the rod control system. The Plant was at 100% power when the rod control f ailure occurred. A controlled reactor / turbine shutdown via boration was subsequently initiated.

The turbine generator was taken off-line at 1448 hours0.0168 days
0.402 hours
0.00239 weeks
5.50964e-4 months
. The reactor was then manually tripped from approximately 3% power. A defective electronic card was identified and replaced prior to placing the generator on-line at 1300 hours0.015 days
0.361 hours
0.00215 weeks
4.9465e-4 months
on February 18, 1985.

The outage was 46.2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
in duration.

On February 27, 1985 with the Plant at 100% power, a rod control system failure occurred which necessitated a controlled reactor / turbine generator shutdown at approximately 0600 hours0.00694 days
0.167 hours
9.920635e-4 weeks
2.283e-4 months
.

.The reactor was manually tripped f rom 10% power at 0705 hours0.00816 days
0.196 hours
0.00117 weeks
2.682525e-4 months
. The rod control system failure was determined to be a defective circuit board which was replaced prior to taking the reactor critical at 0605 hours0.007 days
0.168 hours
0.001 weeks
2.302025e-4 months
on February 28, 1985. The reactor startup was terminated at 0845 hours0.00978 days
0.235 hours
0.0014 weeks
3.215225e-4 months
to allow surveillance testing of the reactor trip bypass breaker. At 1330 hours0.0154 days
0.369 hours
0.0022 weeks
5.06065e-4 months
on the same day, a power range positive rate trip occurred as the reactor was being taken critical.

On February 28, 1985, the Plant was preparing to start-up from the forced outage.
