Dear Sir:

By letter'of July 13, 1983, Boston Edison (BECo) provided a report describing i

the lifting systems used at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (PNPS), and evaluated these systems for compliance with the requirements contained in NUREG 0612, Control of Heavy Loads.

At the time of submittal, BEco did not have sufficient documentation on the design and fabrication of two special lifting devices, the Reactor Head

-Strongback and the Dryer / Separator Lifting Sling Assembly, to conclusively establish compliance with the stress design factors for load bearing members

' of ANSI N14.6-1978, Section 3.2.

Instead BEco provided four suggested points of alternative verification.

'At the request of MRC, BEco further investigated this issue.

General Electric

. provided sufficient data on the design and fabrication, which was, in turn, U

subjected to analysis.

The results are contained in a matrix accompanying

' this letter, and it indicates that both special lifting devices meet or exceed-the ANSI N14.6-1978 ultimate and yield factors of safety.

BEco believes that this submittal concludes our activities concerning special lifting' devices associated'with the reactor building lifting system. Should you wish further information on-this issue, please contact us.
