Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn:

Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555

Subject:

Deaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-412, License No. NPF-73 NRC Bulletin 92-01 Provided is a revised response to NRC Bulletin 92-01, " Failure of Thermo-Lag. 330 Fire Barrier System to Maintain Cabling in Wide Cable Trays and Small Coniuits Free of Fire Damage."

As previously identified in our original letter of July 29, 1992, there are nine (9) fire areas at Beaver Valley Power Station (BVPS)

Unit 2

that utilize TSI thermo-lag fire barrier material on small size conduit (4

inches or less) for protecting cable to meet the requirements of Section III-G of Appendix R to 10 CFR 50.

The TSI thermo-lag material is not installed on any cable trays at BVPS Unit 2.

Based on recent information received on the subject and discussions with NRC staff personnel, the subject fire barriers have been declared poten, tially inoperable.

As

such, the appropriate compensatory measures in the form of one-hour fire watch patrols have been instituted.

Thesc compensatory measures are consistent with our existing' fire

-protection program for. inoperable barriers with automatic detection provided in the affected area.

These fire watch patrols are to be an interim measure until such time as permanent corrective measures can be implemented.

Appropriate actions to restore fire barrier operability are being developed through an industry program being coordinated by NUMARC.

In addition to the compancatory measuren described, our fire protection program requires a

special report to the NRC if the subject fire barriers are not restored to-operability within 7 days.

The fire barriers will not be restored within 7 days; as such, a special report will be required.

Ilowever, this letter discusses the subject fire

barriers, the _ compensatory actions
taken, and the planned actions for restoration of fire barrier operability and, therefore, fulfills the requirements of the special report.

No additional report will be submitted.
