Dear Mr. Ebneter:

Subject:

VIRGIL C. SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION 00CKET NO. 50/395 OPERATING LICENSE NO. NPF-12 SPECIAL REPORT 92-004 (SPR 920004)

SUPPLEMENT 1 South Carolina Electric & Gas Company submitted Special Report 92-004 on July 2, 1992, documenting the Main Plant Vent High Range Process Monitor, RMA-13, being inoperable due to spiking and spurious alarms. At the time of submittal, the cause of the spiking and spurious alarms had not been identified and it was noted that i supplement report would be submitted when the unit was repaired and returned tc service. As documented in the July 2, 1992, submittal, the monitor was declared inoperable on June 17, 1992, and declared operable on June 25, 1992. The monitor was again declared inoperable on June 27, '992,

. and was subsequently declared operable on July 6, 1992. On July 17, 1992, the monitor was again declared inoperable.

Extensive troubleshooting of the detector assembly, remote meter assembly, connectors and associated cable was performed and no electrical abnormality was identified. It was determined that vibration from the-Auxiliary Building ventilation duct was transmitted to the unit causing spurious operation at the low end of the instrument scale. To correct the condition, shock mount 3 were installed on the detector mounting to eliminate the vibration.

The unit was reinstalled, satisfactorily tested and was declared operable at 1830 hours0.0212 days
0.508 hours
0.00303 weeks
6.96315e-4 months
or. July 30, 1992.

Should you have any questions, please contact Mr. R. J. Bouknight at 803-345-4085.

Very truly yours,

/4
