Gentlemen:
The purpose of this submittal is to request approval pursuant to 10CFR50. 5 5a (a ) ( 3), for the use of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code Case N-509 as an alternative to existing ASME Section XI Code requirements which are currently in effect at all Entergy's nuclear
- stations, i.e.,
Arkansas Nuclear 1 and 2, Grand Gulf, Waterford 3 and River Bend.
Code Case N-509 is contained in the 1995 Edition of Nuclear Code Cases but has not been included in Regulatory Guide 1.147, " Inservice Inspection Code Cases Acceptability - ASME Section XI Division 1."

1 Code Case N-509 provides alternative rules for the selection and examination of integrally welded attachments for Class 1, 2 and 3 components. It is believed that the approval of this code case reduces the number of integrally welded attachments that require examination and provides increased examinations requirements for integral attachments when j
components are found deformed. This code case has been recently approved 4
for River Bend Nuclear Station for use during their first interval in an NRC correspondence, dated January 16, 1996.
Approval for the use of this code case is requested by August 31, 1996.
Approval of this code case will allow its use during the current and upcoming intervals at each respective site.
Should you have any questions regarding this request, please contact Riley Ruffin at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station 601-437-2167.
Yours t C
