6 NOTIFICATION OF' NONCOMPLIANCE WITH EFFLUENT LIMITATIONS - NPDES PERMIT NO. AL0022080 - BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT Description of the discharge--Discharge No. 102 - Sedimentation pond effluent to the greenhouse discharge canal.
A sample of the greenhouse discharge canal 25 feet downstream of the sedimentation pond discharge (the point of compliance for pH) collected at 1400 on November 21 had a pH value of 3.27 st.andard units (s.u.).
The minimum pH limit for this discharge is 6.0 s.u.
Cause and period of the noncompliance--The cause of the noncompliance is not known. The discharge from the sedimentation pond was acidic (pH of 3.14).
However, discharges having approximately the same pH and a greater rate of flow have occurred prior to and af ter the noncompliance without causing the pH to fall below 6.0 s.u. at the point of compliance. Samples collected at 1200 on November 16 and 1605 on November 21 had pH values of 7.53 and 7.42 s.u.,
respectively. Therefore, the period of noncompliance was less than 124 hours0.00144 days <br />0.0344 hours <br />2.050265e-4 weeks <br />4.7182e-5 months <br />.
Steps taken to reduce, eliminate, and prevent recurrence of the noncomplying discharge--The discharge from the sedimentation pond was terminated after the noncomplying sample was collected.
Since the cause of the noncompliance is not 6.nown, no corrective measures are planned at this time.
