Dear Mr. President:

You have, this minute, concluded your second inaugural speech.

Your moving delivery of its gentle message has prompted me to write this letter.

Those of us who live on Long Island, in Suffolk County, and most particularly those of us who live on its Fast End, heard a cisquieting discord in "our American song."

For years we have battled against the greedy and ceceitful maneuverings of Long Island Lighting Company to build ana operate the Shornbw Swlear Plant--a three billion dollar monster situated on tne North Fork,

~

E a 'olt beyond the middle of Long Island.

It is common knowledge that there has been no shortage of electric power in this area, anc that LILCO's interest is purely and simply in the almighty buck.

Should a disaster occur at that plant--and it has been well documented that its shoddy construction promises that it will--those of us who live east of it will be doomed.

A map of Long Island shows clearly that we live at the end of a one-way street; we will have no escape.

I ask you simply to explain to me how your compassionate administration sees fit to allow its Nuclear Regulatory Commission to flaunt its authority by ignoring the State of New York, Suffolk County, local Townships, and every single civic organization--not to mention the tens of thousands of individuals--all of whom are adamantly against the opening of the Shoreham plant.

Your pro-nuclear stand is well known, and I surely do not argue your right to hold it.

But this ludicrous situation indicates to me that the NRC is using your stand as a blanket approval of the nuclear incustry regardless of the consequences to the people directly involvea.

I'm sure this is not your intention.

Will you PLEI.SE take a look at this situation?

You will see that LILCO is manipulatin6 the NEC on behalf of its shareholders, and cares not one whit for its ratepayers.

I am not a child.

I am not an alarmist.

And I am natuninformed.

kr. President, this is a matter of live and death.

May I please hear from you?

Having made my plea, let me congratulate you on the commencement of your second tern in office; I wish you well.

i.ith thanks for your attention, Phyllis (Ers. John) Reed
