May 11, 2020 The Honorable Gene L. Dodaro Comptroller General of the United States U.S. Government Accountability Office 441 G Street, NW Washington, DC 20548

Dear Mr. Dodaro:

On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your April 10, 2020, letter that provides an overall status of NRCs implementation of recommendations from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) and highlights areas identified by GAO where open recommendations should be given high priority. Those areas are (1) addressing the security of radiological sources, (2) improving the reliability of cost estimates, (3) improving strategic human capital management, and (4) ensuring the cybersecurity of the nation.

The Commission recognizes GAOs concerns regarding the open recommendations and appreciates GAOs recognition that the NRC is making progress in implementing appropriate corrective actions commensurate with the significance of each recommendation. Enclosed is an update on these actions.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact me or have your staff contact John Jolicoeur, Executive Technical Assistant, Office of the Executive Director for Operations, at (301) 415-1642 or by email at John.Jolicoeur@nrc.gov.

Sincerely, Kristine L. Svinicki
