Byron Nuclear Power Station, Units 1 and 2 Facility Operating Licenses NPF-37 and NPF-66 NRC Docket Nos. 50-454 and 50-455

The purpose of this letter is to inform the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that Byron Station Units 1 and 2 is invoking an ASME Section XI code case that has been found acceptable to the NRC staff for implementation in the inservice inspection oflight-water-cooled nuclear power plants as documented in NRC Regulatory Guide 1.147, revision 11.
Regulatory Guide 1.147, revision 11, references the following Code Case as oeing approved for use:
Code Case N-491: Alternative Rules for Examination of Class 1,2, 3, and MC Component Supports of Light Water Cooled Power Plants,Section XI, Division 1.
Byron Station is committed to the use of ASME Section XI,1983 Edition, Summer Addenda. In the 1989 Edition of ASME Section XI, Article IWA-2441(e), the licensee's use of Code Cases is subject to acceptance by the regulatory and enforcement authorities.
Although this is not a requirement of the 1983 Edition, this notification informs the NRC that the Byron Station Units 1 and 2 First Interval Inservice Inspection Program and Plan will be revised to reflect inclusion of Code Case N-491.
