AECM-85/2-0003 Page 1 Summary of Environmental Protection Program Respecting Construction of Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) for Six Months Ending December 31, 1984 I

CONSTRUCTION HIGHLIGHTS o

Construction of Unit 2 is 33.8% complete. There was limited construction on GGNS Unit 2 during the reporting period principally for the purpose of protecting the Company's investment.

o Work on the Hazardous Waste Storage Area was completed during the reporting period.

VEHICULAR MOVEMENT o

No "off limit" violatiors were observed during the reporting

[

period.

DUST CONTROL o

No dust control violations were observed during the reporting period.

SM0KE CONTROL o

Two smoke control violations occurred during the reporting period. Plastic bags being burned caused high particulate emissions. Burn pit personnel were instructed to mix trash and pie: tic bags to prevent this problem.

EROSION CONTROL o

Rainfall was recorded Ln 46 separate occasions during the reporting period, with an accumulated rainfall of 38.28 inches. Runoff samples were collected on 17 of these instances and returned to the Environmental Surveillance Laboratory for suspended solids analysis. The results of these analyses indicated that no adverse levels of sediment are being deposited in the floodplains. Total rainfall for 1984 was 67.29 inches.

CHEMICAL AND SOLID WASTE CONTROL o

A total of 594 drums of nonhazardous waste material was disposed of onsite during the reporting period, o

Eighteen drums of hazardous waste were shipped to a Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility in Emelle, Alabama.

Fifteen drums contained metal cleaning solutions and three drums contained PVC cement.

ATTACHMENT to AECM-85/2-0003 Page 2 NOISE CONTROL o

No obviously excessive noise levels were detected during the reporting period.

SEDIMENT BASINS A & B o

No prehlems were encountered with the Basins during the report ng period.

REGIONAL GROUNDWATER DEWATERING o

The 12 regional groundwater wells were read during the reporting period. Minor changes occurred in 0W-4, 0W-4A and 0W-202. Significant changes occurred in 0W-10. The top-of-casing elevation for 0W-10 is at ground level and heavy rainfall allows an influx of water resulting in significant increases in elevaticn. Consequently, during dry periods, the elevation in well OW-10 stabilizes and frequently shows significant decreases.

Plans have been made to reset an elevated casing to prevent infiltration from heavy rains.

o The fifteen per:hed aquifer wells were read on a routine basis with only one significant change. Well MW-7 had a decrease of five feet during a c j period in August.

VEGETATION o

No vegetational abnormalities were observed during the reporting period.

o Clearing of MP&L land for the access road right-of-way to the new Claiborne County port was completed during the period.

Constru: tion of this road was also completed during the reporting period.

o Clipping of open fields and fringe areas was completed during the reporting period, o

Winter food plots were planted in strategically located areas during the reparting period.

TRANSMISSION LINES o

A semiannual aerial survey of GGNS associated transmission lines was conducted during the reporting period. No major erosion areas were observed.

o The Baxter-Wilson Line has recently been recleared.
