Further Response to Request for Additional Infom1ation (TAC No. M82958)

Concerning Generation of Medical Rempy Facility Beam for Iluman Herapy, License No. R-37. Docket No. 50-20 Gentlemen:

On 07/30/92 and on 08/31/92, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology submitted revised versions of proposed MITR Technical Specification No. 6.5, " Generation of Medical Therapy Facility Beam for Human Therapy." At the request of NRC (NRR/PDNP), a further revision is hereby made in that submittal. Soccifically, provisions 19 and 20 of the version previously submitted have now bee. nerged with existing provisions 5 and 14. This entailed the following changes:

(a) Provision 14 was completely rewritten to specify the frequency for perfonning calibration checks, functional checks, characterizations, and beam monitor calibrations. Please note that the functional check frequency has been changed from monthly to weekly and that a requirement to do it and a calibration check after a design modification has been added.

(b) Material that defined the procedure for calibrating the beam monitors has L now been made into a definition (definition #5) so as to parallel the definitions for calibration check, functional check, and charactenzation.

L (c) The interlock originally described in provision 20 for shutter closure from within the facility is now provision 5(e) and its surveillt.nce requirement is now provision 12(f).

(d) Several other provisions and definitions were renumbered.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page 2 in addition to the above, provision 5(c) has been changed to an 'cither/or' requirement.

This matches t'< existing shutter design.

Enclosed please find a revised copy of the proposed specification. This chtmge has been reviewed and approved by the AllT Reactor Safeguards Conunittee.

Sincerely.
