ATlN: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Joseph H, Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit 1 B.gfoonse to Supolemental SER No. 2 on SOUG Resolution of US A-46 Gentlemen:
On February 19, 1987, the NRC issued Generic letter 87-02, " Verification of Seismic Adequacy of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment in Operating Reactors, Unresolved Safety Issue (USI) A-46."
This Generic Letter encouraged utilities to participate in a generic program to accomplish seismic verifir.ation. As a result, the Seismic Qualification Utility Group (SQUG)' developed the " Generic Implementatior_ Procedure (GIP) for Seismic Verification of Nuclear Pl nt Equipment." On May 22, 1992, the NRC Staff
-issued Gene:ic Letter 87-02, Supplemental 1, which ir.cluded Supplemental Safety Evaluation Report Number 2 (SSER-2) on the GIP, Revision 2, as corrected on February 14, 1992. The NRC letter requests that SQUG member utilities provide a schedule for implementing the GIP vithin 120 days.
As a member of SQUG, Southern Nuciear Operating Company commits to use the SQUG mthodology as documented in the GIP Revision 2, as corrected on February 14, 1992 including clarifications, interpretations and exceptions identified in SSER-2 as clarified by the August 21,.1992 SQUG letter, in order to resolve USI A-46 at Farley Nuclear Plaat - Unit 1.
Given the magnitude of the effort required to achieve resolution of USI A-46, final o
implementaticn must be carefully integrated with outage schedules and the seismic IPEEE response.
Based upon the current schedule, the plant seismic walkdown wil: be conducted during the Unit I-12th refueling outage set to bea4.i in M.'.r.n 1994.
Considering the workload set forth by the criteria of the G;P, a Seism',c Evaluation Report summarizing the results of the A-46 program at Farley Nuclear Plant - U.iit I will be wbmitted to the NRC before May 22, 1995.
If there are any questions, please advise.
Respectfully submitted,
/
