Dear Ms. Wieland:

The Department has reveiwed BG&E's request to perform testing of C!amtrol CT-1 to control macrofouling in the Saltwrater System of Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (State Discharge Permit No. 86-DP-0187). The Department approves the Clamtrol CT-1 testing (and Foam-Trol use if it becomes necessary) in accordance with the plan of study (dated 5/22/92) subject to the following conditions:

1. _ Biomonitoring tests shall be conducted on the effluent from Outfall 001 twice, approximately 30 days apart. Each testing event shall consist of a 48-hour acute defir,itive renewal test using an approved estuarine vertebrate species, and a 48-hour acute definitive renewal test using an approved estuarine invertebrate species. Approved estuarine species for

. acute testing are sheepshead minnow, silversides, grass shrimp, and i

mysid shrimp.

2. Testing shall begin within two weeks after the start of the project.

Test results chall be submitted as soon as they become available.

3. ~ The effluent trom Outfall 001 shall be rnonitored daily for Clamtrol CT-1 concentration. These results shall be kept in a logbook.

4. BG&E shall have in place, and on standby, a method of introducing bentonite clay slurry to detoxify the Clamtrol CT-1 should the above toxicity testing demonstrate residual effluent toxicity.
