Gentlemen:

Millstnne Nuclear Power Station, Unit 2 IE Inspection 50-336/80-11 Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) documented commitments in Reference (1) to install two new offstream liquid effluent monitors in a low background area and to prepare new solid calibration sources which correlate to known liquid and gaseous concentrations. These commitments were made in response to IE Inspection 50-336/80-11.

Reference (2) revised the completion dates for these items from December 31,1981 to December 31,1982.

The two required monitors were procured in late 1981.

Reference (3) summarized Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) efforts to date to install two new offstream liquid effluent monitors in a low background area and to prepare calibration sources which correlate to known liquid concentrations.

Reference (3) also documented NNECO's intention of completing these actions by June 30,1984.

Reference (4) revised the completion dates for these items from June 30,1984 to November 30, 1984. The detailed work activities necessary to install two new offstream liquid effluent monitors were more extensive than originally estimated.

9 The radiation monitors were reloca+.ed to a lower background radiation area using new offstream liquid effluent monitors and associated electronics.

The original radiation monitors were retired from service and will be removed during the next reiueling outage.

Liquid calibration sources of known concentrations have been prepared and are sealed in source canisters for use in quarterly calibration of liquid effluent monitors. The new offstream liquid effluent monitors have a removable sample canister which is replaced by a source canister for calibration.

Two new sets of solid sources were prepared and analyzed. These solid sources correlate to known liquid concentrations and are used for calibration checks of non-offstream radiation monitors. No correlation to gaseous concentrations by solid sources are used in radiation monitor calibrations.

This completes our planned actions regarding the follow-up to IE Inspection 50-336/80-11.

Very truly yours, NORTHEAST NUCLEAR ENERGY COMP ANY W.b DcWTkt W. G. Counsil Senior Vice President M
