ENCLOSURE 1

~ CURRENT STATUS

SUMMARY

OF SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 WITH REGARDING T0.10 CFR 50.49 The current status summary of Sequoyah units 1 and 2 with regard to 10 CFR 50.49 is provided in table 1.

'/ '

Sequoyah unit 1 As provided in enclosure 2, Sequoyah unit 1 during its second

- refueling outage (February 20, 1984 through April 17, 1984) lacked 166 replacement components due to procurement / delivery-related and installation-related problems. TVA has currently been averaging

replacing two to three non-outage components per week on Sequoyah

, unit 1. If possible, TVA' will continue to work non-outage components during power operation. In addition, TVA is currently scheduling an approximately 16-day ice weighing outage on Sequoyah

~

unit 1 during the later part of April. TVA plans to rer' ce a substantial portion of the remaining Category IV compo . '" ring the outage. TVA has committed to be in compliance with lu CFR 50.49

. by startup following the unit' I cycle 3 refueling outage which is

currently s'cheduled for September 1985, but in no event later than November-30, 1985.

s Sequoyah unit 2 Since our November 7 and 21,, 1984 letters to NRC, we have reduced

/ the' number of Category IV components by one item. TVA plans to replace this component at the earliest practical time, but in no event later than Noveaber 30, 1985.

TVA believes Sequoyah has acted in good faith in reducing the number of Category III and IV-components for both units and 'ill continue to qualify these items as soon as possible. (Based ou our understanding of the environmental e;quipment qualification required by 10 CFR 50.49, Sequoyah will be in full-compliance with those requirements no later than November 30, 1985 for both units.)

OF UNQUALIFIED .

UNIT ITEM COMPONENTS COMMENTS / REASONS 1 Letter to NRC dated May 14, 1984 8' TVA failed to identify these components (steam generator level control valve

' positioners) which were being tested.

These items have now completed qualifi-cation testing.

1 Letter to NRC dated September 7, 6# 6 components were recategorized to 1984 Category IV due to recent main steam superheat-issue inside and outside containment as identified by Westinghouse and IE Notice 84-90.

1 Letter to NRC dated December 20, 588 As a result of a Watts Bar 1984 nonconformance report, TVA determined that some components (e.g., solenoid valves, limit switches) for Sequoyah lacked sufficient documentation to determine if qualified sealing devices were installed.

1 Letter to NRC dated January 8, 16' a. 8 components recategorized to 1985 Category IV as a result of our review of Operations and Maintenance Reminder (0&MR) 194. *

b. 4 components were determined unqualified to 10 CFR 50.49 requirements during review by TVA.

Three out of four of those

  • components have been replaced. *
c. TVA discovered 4 solenoid valves not replaced as required. TVA immed!.ately rep'_ aced these components.
