Docket No. 50-348 l
Director, Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
20555 Attention: Mr. S. A. Varga Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit 1 IEB 80-11; Masonry Walls Gentlemen:
Alabama Power Company has received the Unit 1 safety evaluation related to IEB 80-11 that requires Alabama Power Company to perform additional modifications to masonry wall ICBW-34. Upon receipt of the safety evaluation, Alabama Power Company performed a review of the safety evaluation package and identified or:e additional wall (ICBW-62) that does not meet the revised seismic criteria used by the NRC as criteria for the safety evaluation.
As a result, Alabama Power Company commits to complete necessary i
modifications to both walls (ICBW-34 and ICBW-62) in accordance with the NRC criteria. Due to the nature of the equipment adjacent to wall ICBW-34, the modifications required are planned to be performed during an outage. The next scheduled outage for Unit 1 is the sixth refueling outage planned to commence April 5,1985. The orderly process of packaging design changes for this outage has been orbgoing for several months. This process requires all design changes to be completed within the constraints of the outage critical path. Because of the time required to obtain design and assemble all materials on-site prior to commencement of the modifications effort, it is not feasible to add additional items to the outage without potentially adversely impacting other outage items and the outage critical path. Based on the above, Alabama Power will complete all necessary modifications at the first Unit 1 outage of sufficient duration subsequent to the sixth refueling outage but no later than the end of the Unit 1 seventh refueling outage currently scheduled to begin in the fall of 1986.
