20555 Attention:
Mr. S. A. Varga Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit 1 Feedwater Nozzle Cracking Gentlemen:
In a letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated March 19, 1984, Alabama Power Company committed to apprise the NRC of its determination of a final resolution to the feedwater nozzle cracking concern prior to the sixth refueling outage for Unit 1.
The purpose of this letter is to provide a status-of the final resolution.
Alabama Power Company has placed an order with Westinghouse Electric Corporation for the fabrication of thermal liner assemblies for the feedwater nozzles. Due to the engineering and fabrication time involved, these liners will not be available for installation at the sixth refueling outage. The feedwater piping to steam generator i
nozzle welds will be inspected for cracking during the sixth refueling outage and if cracking is found, components will be replaced in kind.
Af ter fabrication and delivery of the thermal liner assemblies, installation will take place at a future outage, only if cracking is detected.
If there are any questions, please advise.
Yours truly, s/'
a R. P. Mcdonald
