Vogtle Electric Generating Plant-Units 1 and 2, 50-424, 50-425; HVAC Duct Support Weld Discrepancies; also GN-324, dated March 2, 1984 Attention: Mr. James P. O'Reilly Our previous correspondence on this subject provided a tentative schedule for an investigation and evaluation of the integrity of HVAC duct supports installed by Pullman /Kenith-Fortson (P/K-F).

This interim response provides an update on the progress of our evaluation and fore-casts an expected completion date for the resolution of this issue.

From a list of 3635 installed and inspected HVAC duct supports, Bechtel Power Corporation, the Vogtle architect-engineer, randomly selected a statistical sample of 60 supports to satisfy a 95/95 confi-dence level of support integrity.

This sample was used in a comprehen-sive visual reinspection program, using the acceptance criteria of Appendix VC to the HVAC specification (X4AJ01), to identify clearly and accurately all weld indications on each discrete weld of each support in the sample.

The Georgia Power Company Construction Department submitted the 4

resul ts of the reinspection program to Bechtel Power Corporation on June 21, 1984. Bechtel is presently conducting an independent determina-tion of the equivalent available as-built weld for each reinspected weld with indications, and a verification that adequate design margin exists between the required weld strength by design and the available as-built strength.

This work is expected to be completed by September 15, 1984.

Based on the expected completion date for the engineering evaluation and allowing time for internal review of the evaluation results, Georgia Power Company expects to submit the results of our evaluation of the HVAC duct support weld discrepancies to the NRC by October 26, 1984.
