ST ATE O F CO N N ECTIC UT DEPA RTMENT OF HEA LTH SERI' ICES PREVENTABLE DISEASES DIVISION September 17, 1984 Dr. B. J. Youngblood Chief, Divison of Licensing U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission

' Washington, DC 20555

Dear Dr. Youngblood:

In reference to the Draft Environmental Impact Statement-Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 3, the Connecticut Department of Health Services is requesting an extension of the deadline for comments until October 17, 1984. We would appreciate the courtesy of an extension for the following reasons:

(1)

The notice of availability of the document was not received by our division until several days ago; (2)

The Department of' Health Services has not yet received, or indeed had access to, a copy of the document; and (3)

Most importantly, the considerable citizen concern within the State of Connecticut regarding the construction and operation of nuclear power plants mandates a serious and careful review of the document by the agency charged with protection of the public health in the state in which the Millstone plant is located.

Your understanding of the exigencies of the situation and the necessity of our careful review is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely yours,

??
