September 17, 1984 Docket Nos. 50-348 50-364 Director, Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.- S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Attention: Mr. S. A. Varga Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Units 1 and 2 Reactor Coolant Inventory Tracking System

' Gentlemen:

By letter dated July 6,1984, Alabana Power Company ccmmitted to issue a purchase order for a reactor coolant inventory tracking system (RCITS) in September 1984. The installation of a RCITS would meet the requirements of NUREG-0737, Item II.F.2 and Generic Letter 82-28.

Proposals have been received from both Technology for Energy Corporation and Combustfor. Engineering and are currently under detailed review. Due to the unscheduled shutdown of the Farley - Unit 2 for steam generator tube inspections, the RCITS post-bid vendor meetings have been delayed by several weeks. This shift in schedule will make it difficult to conduct thorough technical and contractural discussions with the vendors within the previously submitted time-frame. To ensure that a satisfactory system is purchased, Alabama Power Company will .

finalize vendor reviews following startup from the current outage and select a vendor in October 1984.

Yours very truly, 8409240323 840917
