Vogtle Electric Generating Plants-Units 1 and 2, 5$424. 50-425; Reliance Electic Junction Boxes Attention: Mr. James P. O'Reilly On July 20, 1984, Mr. C. W. Hayes, Vogtle Quality Assurance Manager, informed Mr. John Rogge and Mr. Vince Panciera of the USNRC Region II of a potential deficiency concerning the mounting of Reliance Electric junction boxes.

The class 1E Reliance Electric junction boxes were seismically qualified using bolted connections to a rigid structure at the junction box mounting tabs.

The field installation drawing allows mounting

.using either bolted connections at the junction box interior or at the mounting tabs.

Additionally, junction boxes may have been mounted to non-rigid supports.

Georgia Power Company is reviewing the junction box bolting and supporting structure concerns.

A preliminary analysis indicates that the junction box bolting method used in the field is adequate when compared with the qualified mounting method.

A field wal kdown is scheduled to be completed in August 1984 to identify the different support configurations used at the site.

The worst. cases identified will be analyzed to determine their capability to withstand a Design Basis Earthquake (DBE).

Georgia Power Company will _ inform the NRC by October 12, 1984, of the estimated completion date for the evaluation of these potentially reportable concerns.

This response contains no proprietary information and may be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.

Yours truly, 8409240003 840817
