Dear Mr. DeLaBarre:
Enclosed is an application (XW025) dated September 27, 2019, received by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) from Perma-Fix Northwest Richland, Inc. The application requests the export of low-level radioactive waste in the form of contaminated personal protective equipment, plastic, paper, and small quantities of glass generated by hospital and research projects in Italy. The waste will be imported into the U.S. under a general import license and will be returned to Italy, the originating country.
Before taking action on this request, the NRC would appreciate the assistance of the Department of State in notifying the Government of Italy of the proposed export and obtaining any comments it might have in the context of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on Radioactive Waste Management.
