(a)
Letter from Mr. G. C. Creel (BG&E) to NRC Document Control Desk, dated March 25, 1992, License Amendment Request; Steam Generator Inspections Gentlemen:
The Baltimore Gas & Electric Company wishes to provide additional information to support our request for license amendment (Reference a). Thu supporting information does not affect the determination of signiGcant hazards provided in Reference (a), nor does it alter the requested changes.
Change 2 in Reference (a) requested a one-time variance for Calvert Cliffs Unit 2 from the proposed requirement to examine at least 20 percent of the steam generator tubes to support extending the inspection frequency beyond 24 months. The justification for this one-time variance included the good steam generator chemistry control in the shutdown period between the 100 percent inspection of the Unit 2 steam generator tubes in April 1989, and the inspection of 15% of the steam generatot tubes in October 1990 prior to startup.
In support of this one-time varit.nce for Unit 2. BG&E wishes to offer further evidence of the good condition of the Calvert Cliffs steam generators. The Unit I steam generators were controlled to the same chemistry requirements during the 1989-1990 shutdown as were the Unit 2 steim generators.
An inspection of the Unit 1 steam generators just completed during the current Unit 1 ret'ucling outage revealed little degradation. Only 18 of the 1.6,861 tubes inspected full length with the bobbin coil were plugged as a result of eddy current indications. In addition,3-coil Motorized Rotating Pancake Coil (MRPC) examination was conducted or 25% of the hot leg tube-to-tube sheet exmnsion zone region in each steam generator. No cracking was detccted. We believe this evidence supports BG&E's request to delay the next Uni: 2 steam generator inspection until the next scheduled refueling outage in March 1993.
