General' Description ~of the Facilities.

a

,g

The facilities consist of; the. following systems at the; Plant and, in each'

,a case,Einclude -related machinery, egaipment and related facilities:.

i e

.;.~

f Sanitry Drainage 4and Treatment Systems. : The -sanitaryf: drainage and j

treatment ' system a collects,. transports,. treats,. clarifies ' _and returns wastewater
. to. the: water ' reclamation facility ; for reuse. - %e : system may.

' : include a :. wet : well,1 sewage lift 1 station, alrge tank, package sewage.

-treatment plants,. chlorine contact; chamber, aangs,i panps, piping,; valves,
controls and-instrumentation. >

4

_ Chemical tenste Systems. The chemical' waste systems. for each unit, at the :

Plant consists of_ albsystems that collect chemical westes from various: area.

~

4

' of the Plant, neutralize -- the - chemicals in - a2ch wastes 'and/or - transfer aleh wistes. to the ' chemical ' drain-. tank or lig2id radwaste ~ holdup ~ tank.. Each<

. system may.. include decontamination facilities, drains, samps, a chemical 1

~

drain tank andlrelated piping..

7

... Gaseous Radwaste System.

%e gaseous radwaste. system for each unit at

- the Plant. collects and process potentially.. radioactive gases generated within the unit so that offsite expomare is keptL as. low 'as reasonably.

- achievabic " (ALARA). ~ %e high activity 1 gas is collected and -stored in an

. oxygen-free environment to guard against a rapid hydrogen / oxygen reaction before release' to the environment Lat 'a high altitude through the : main stack.

Each system may include

filters, valves, related radiation-monitoring eglipnent and associated pipiry..

Solid radwaste systems. %e solid :radwaste system for each unit at the plant collects and processes radioactive waste consisting of ' trash, spent ion exchange resins, waste evaporator concentrates, chemical drain tank effluents, laindry drain tank effluents, used filter cartridges, 'and contaminated condensate polisher resins.

%e resins are dewatered -for each unit in their own housings.

Where possible the wastes are conpacted prior to shipment offsite.

The radioactive trash is' segregated from the nonradioactive waste 'in a specially designed b2ilding.

This tuilding also serves :as a alrge volume for packaged. radioactive waste prior to shipment-.

Each systen also includes related radiation monitoring eglipnent.

Licpid Radwaste s" stems.

%e liq 2id radwaste system for each unit at the P: ant collects,. stores and processes radioactive or potentially radioactive waste fluids from various areas 'of each unit. Such waste fluids are. processed by filtration, adsorption,- and ion exchange. Water. is recovered for reuse -in the reactor ' plant system to minimize the giantity of.

ligtid wastes.

Each system includes phase separators, laandry drain tanks, centrifuges, tanks, aanps, pangs,- valves and associated piping. Each systen

' also includes related radiation monitoring eglipment.

' Filtration Eg2ipment.: %e filtration egalpnent for each. unit at the Plant collects.and remove contaminants from gases prior 'to discharge to the

environment in order to ' maintain - off ' site expoaire ALARA.

Each ^ system l includes -' high.. efficiency air 'partio11 ate air; filter banks and charcoal' adsorbers and related mechanical and fire protection egnipment.

R Cooling towers.

We cooling towers for each unit. were designed and constructed - for the purpose of - redicing. the thermal pollution to the

. Altamaha. River from plant waste heat discharge.

%e system for each unit includes associated fans, pimps, piping and fire protection eglipnent.

RadAdd tuilding. %e. RadAdd hiilding was designed and constructed to house additional eglipment necessary for the processing of radioactive lig2 ids under the guidelines of ALARA for Unit 1 after the original design was hiilt.

%e system for each unit includes associated pumps, piping and fire protection eglipnent.

CST Dikes.

%e dikes around the Condensate Storage Tank for each unit were. specifically added to prevent the uncontrolled release to the environment of the water in the Condensate Storage Tank which is potentially radioactive.

Primary Containment.

%e purpose of the Primary ' Contairinent is to prevent the release of radioactive fission prod 1 cts to the environment in

- the event of an accident.

Wis system includes all the instrumentation, logic modales, airlocks, valves and piping necessary to isolate containment.-

Radiation Monitoring systems.

%e p1rpose of the radiation monitoring systems for each unit is to control the release of radioactive pollutants to the envirorsnent.

Closed toop Cooling Systems.

%e closed loop cooling systems include Reactor Blilding Closed Cooling Water and Rad Waste Closed Cooling Water.

%ese systems remove heat from eg2ipment used in the plant and enaire that thermal discharges from the site are minimized.

Spent Riel Handling and Storage Systems.

The spent fuel handling and storage systems for each unit include the spent fuel pool, spent fuel pool coolirg, filters, demineralizers and storage racks.

%is eglipment asaires that the radioactive pollutants within the fuel are maintained in a stable configuration before offsite disposal.
